Junji Ito is a world renown Japanese horror mangaka. His work has developed a substantial cult following, with some deeming him a significant figure in recent horror iconography. Ito began to draw manga at the age of 4, taking inspiration from the works he read in magazines. He continued to draw as a hobby until he became a dental technician in 1984, where he struggled to find a balance between the two. In 1987, he submitted a short story to Monthly Halloween that won an honorable mention in the Kazuo Umezu Prize. This story ran for 13 years and was later serialized as Tomie.

Some of his most notable works include Tomie, a series chronicling an immortal girl who drives her stricken admirers to madness; Uzumaki, a three-volume series about a town obsessed with spirals; and Gyo, a two-volume story in which fish are controlled by a strain of sentient bacteria.

Junji Ito’s Uzumaki was nominated for an Eisner Award in 2003 and 2009. In 2019, Ito received his first Eisner Award for his manga adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and received two more Eisner Awards for his works Remina and Venus in the Blind Spot in 2021. Several of his works were also adapted into the horror anime anthology series: Junji Ito Collection.

Tomie

Tomie was Junji Ito’s first published work. Followed by Tomie Part 2 and Tomie: Again, it was originally submitted to Monthly Halloween, a shōjo magazine, in 1987. Tomie led to him winning the Kazuo Umezu award.

The manga centers around a mysterious, beautiful woman named Tomie Kawakami, identified by her sleek black hair and a beauty mark below her left eye. Tomie possesses an undisclosed power to make any man fall in love with her. She drives people into jealous rages that often lead to brutal acts of violence. With the ability to regenerate and spread her curse to other victims, she is essentially immortal.

The manga has been adapted into a live-action film series with nine installments to date. Tomie was also adapted for The Junji Ito Collection, a horror anime anthology series that premiered in 2018.

Glyceride

Glyceride is chapter 5 of Ito’s Voices in the Dark, a collection of one-shot stories. It is also part of Shiver, another collection of short stories from Ito, under the name Greased.

Glyceride tells the tale of a girl named Yui whose family owns a barbecue restaurant. The place is always dark, dirty, and has a heavy atmosphere of grease permeating everything inside. It’s this sense of grease, both literal and figurative, which creates the otherworldly horror and uneasiness. Ito’s artwork makes the reader feel the very grease the tale’s protagonist speaks about to such a level that it is practically oozing off the pages. While the story is quite brief, it leaves a definite imprint on the reader.

The manga was adapted for The Junji Ito Collection, a horror anime anthology series that premiered in 2018.
